One of the most common questions I receive from my Chinesetown students is: “Can I live in China without fluent Chinese?”
The short answer is, "Yes, no problem at all".
In this blog, I want to help you picture what an honest, clear-eyed life in China actually looks like, even with zero Chinese skills.
For day-to-day survival, you can easily get by. In major cities, such as Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, supermarkets are well-stocked, and restaurants often carry bilingual photo menus. All of the transportation - like the metro, taxis and airports - have signs in English. So you will be well covered.
As you venture out to smaller cities, most locals speak little to no English. You may find that small interactions like asking for directions, resolving billing issues, or chatting with your landlord become exercises in patience. That said, Chinese people tend to be very helpful. Even when there is a language barrier, most locals are incredibly patient and warm with foreigners making an effort!
The majority of jobs for expats in China do not require speaking Chinese.
Among them, the clearest path is English teaching. Demand for native English speakers in schools, training centres, and universities remains strong across China. In fact, many schools prefer their international teachers to speak only English in the workplace, as this supports full language immersion for students.
To sum up, unless a role clearly asks for Chinese language ability, consider it a bonus rather than a requirement.
Location matters
Where you live in China will significantly define your experience more than almost any other factor. Tier-one cities in China always have well-established expat communities, English-friendly infrastructure, and international schools and hospitals. My tip is to choose your city wisely – start in a major international hub if you are just arriving and have minimal Chinese. You can always venture further once you have found your footing.
Use digital tools for daily tasks
You may have never heard of WeChat and Alipay before. These two apps will deeply bond to your life in China. The good news is that both English-language interfaces. Just give you a quick overview of these two – WeChat handles everything from messaging friends to paying for groceries to booking hospital appointments; Alipay covers payment, bike rentals, transportation tickets, and more.
Start studying basic Chinese
Even if you plan to work in an immersive English-speaking environment, learning Chinese will enrich your experience enormously. It opens doors to local friendships, a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, and the confidence to navigate unexpected situations with ease.
So, can you live in China without speaking Chinese?
My honest answer is: YES. While the Chinese language will not be mandatory to live in China, it will make a real difference if you are willing to pick up some basics. It will smooth out the bumps of daily life and help you settle into your new home far more quickly.
The good news is that English 1 has been offering free Chinese lessons for many years. From ‘Introduce yourself’ to ‘A two-part allegorical saying’ (歇后语), we are aiming to cover all levels of Chinese learners and help our learners feel truly at home in China.
