The City of Gardens
Surrounded by majestic hills, two major rivers and a lake, Hefei is considered by many to be one of the most scenic cities in China. The opportunity to teach in Hefei is fun because there is plenty of cosmopolitan flavour here – from the temple markets and pedestrian streets to the KTV parlours and lively nightclubs, there’s plenty here to entertain.
Best of all, it costs virtually nothing. The cost of living in Hefei is one of the lowest in China making teaching in English in Hefei a steal. Whether it’s shopping for vegetables at your local grocer or getting a haircut, daily expenses take a small portion of your paycheck, leaving you with plenty to save or travel. Western conveniences are easily available as well in the form of fast-food restaurants, modern apartments, and good public transportation.
The Memorial Temple of Lord Bao is a great attraction to visit – it celebrates a local judge from the Song Dynasty (around 1,000AD) who was revered for his moral character. Today, the temple has a beautiful palace with several halls and pavilions celebrating Lord Bao.
Huangshan or `Yellow Mountain' is located nearby. The site is considered one of the best natural sites in China because of its unique landscape and the `sea of clouds' effect that happens at certain altitudes.
Luzhou Roast Duck is just one of many popular dishes in Hefei’s culinary scene. Others include Lord Bao Fish and Li Hongzhang Hodgepodge.
Lu Opera, a popular localised version of the famous Chinese art of singing, can be found all over the city. It is one of the most beautiful forms of Chinese opera.
