Where History Beckons
Once the capital of some of the earliest kingdoms, Shaoxing boasts a wealth of museums, temples, and ancient sites. It is also the birthplace of Lu Xun, one of China’s most revered writers. As a result, it is popular with tourists, and the city centre is kept clean, green, and pedestrian-friendly.
The city remains relatively small, so all of our teachers live within a twenty-minute walk (or a five-minute bike ride) of the school. Shaoxing is also on the high-speed rail line, meaning you are just thirty minutes from Hangzhou and ninety minutes from Shanghai. This provides easy access to two international cities while avoiding the associated cost of living.
The city is covered in canals, rivers, and other waterways – there are boat rides available and many parks, restaurants, and cafes by the water. Great during the hot summers.
Shaoxing is seriously old – Yu, the Great legendary ruler of China has his tomb on the outskirts of the city. It’s one of many fantastic links to China’s past.
Shaoxing is famous for its `yellow wine', and locals won’t hesitate to offer you a glass as a means of welcoming new teachers to the city.
It is also famous for its `stinky tofu' – the name is not misleading – considered a delicacy amongst those who dare to try it.
